ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings that appear below ChatGPT’s answers, matched to what the person is asking about. OpenAI started showing them on February 9, 2026, to logged-in US adults on the Free and Go plans, and businesses now buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager, much like search or social ads.

For a business owner, that’s a paid placement inside a tool many people now use to research what to buy and who to hire. Here’s how it works as of fall 2026.

When did ChatGPT start showing ads?

OpenAI announced ads in ChatGPT on January 16, 2026, and the first ads appeared on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults in the US. Businesses got self-serve access on May 5, 2026, when OpenAI opened its Ads Manager beta to US advertisers.

The product has kept moving. Self-serve buying expanded to 31 European markets on August 31, and on September 16 OpenAI added a HubSpot integration and a Shopify app for US merchants. Check the date on anything you read about ChatGPT ads, this post included.

Who sees ChatGPT ads, and who doesn’t?

ChatGPT ads show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are ad-free, and accounts identified as under 18 don’t see ads at all.

Two more limits:

  • Free users can pick an ad-free option that comes with lower message limits, so not every Free user is reachable.
  • Ads aren’t shown near conversations about personal health, mental health, or politics.

For B2B advertisers, note that people using company Business or Enterprise accounts won’t see your ads.

Where do ChatGPT ads appear, and how are they labeled?

Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer, labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the response. Each ad shows the advertiser’s name and favicon, a title, short copy, an image, and a link to a landing page.

Write the ad as the obvious next step after the answer. If someone asks whether their AC needs a repair or a replacement, an ad for a same-week diagnostic visit fits that moment. A generic brand slogan doesn’t.

OpenAI also offers product-feed ads for e-commerce (enabled account by account) and is testing Sponsored Agents, which let people chat with a business’s own AI straight from the ad, in a limited alpha.

How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?

ChatGPT matches ads using the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad’s title, copy, and landing page, and context hints the advertiser provides. There are no keywords to bid on. If a user has ads personalization turned on, their past chats and memory can also inform matching, and users can switch that off in settings.

On Google, you choose keywords. Here, your copy, landing page, and context hints do that job, so a page that clearly answers one specific question gives the system more to match on than a homepage trying to say everything. We compare the two models in ChatGPT ads vs. Google Ads.

What can advertisers see about ChatGPT users?

Advertisers never receive anyone’s chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, or IP address. OpenAI says it doesn’t sell user data to advertisers and that ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers.

You get campaign performance and the conversions your own tracking records, through a JavaScript pixel, a server-side Conversions API, or both (deduplicated so a sale counts once). Reporting uses a 1-day view-through attribution window, which is worth knowing before you compare results with Google or Meta.

How do businesses buy ChatGPT ads?

Businesses buy ChatGPT ads in OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. You set a daily budget (the minimum is $25 a day), choose a bidding type, pick your locations, and build the ad.

There are three ways to bid:

  • CPM: you pay per thousand impressions.
  • CPC: you pay per click. OpenAI suggests starting around a $3-5 maximum cost per click.
  • oCPC: conversion-optimized bidding that’s still billed per click. It’s in open beta and has to be enabled on your account.

Location targeting works by country, and in the US by state, metro area (DMA), or ZIP code. For budgets and how to size a first test, see how much ChatGPT ads cost.

Can a local business keep ChatGPT ads local?

Yes. In the US you can target a state, a metro area, or specific ZIP codes, so a local business doesn’t have to pay for attention it can’t serve.

Picture a pool company in Brandon. Targeting all of Florida would spend money on people in Jacksonville and Miami who will never call. Targeting the Tampa Bay metro area is closer. Targeting only the ZIP codes the crew actually drives to each week is tighter still, and that’s usually where a small test budget should start.

Which businesses can’t advertise on ChatGPT?

Gambling and political ads aren’t allowed on ChatGPT. Dating, alcohol, drugs, and ads with health claims are restricted, and advertisers in finance, healthcare, and legal are approved case by case.

If you’re in a case-by-case category, read OpenAI’s ad policies before writing any creative, and don’t set a launch date until you’re approved.

How are ChatGPT ads different from being mentioned in the answer?

They’re separate systems. An ad sits below the answer, carries a sponsored label, and doesn’t change what ChatGPT says. Getting your business named inside the answer can’t be bought; it comes from what ChatGPT can find and trust about you across the web.

Earning those mentions is the work of AI search optimization: clear pages, consistent business information, and the kind of outside coverage assistants draw on. A business that’s recommended in the answer and also shows an ad below it gets two shots at the same customer. Ads start fast; earned mentions take longer to build and keep working after you stop spending.

Should your business test ChatGPT ads?

Test them if your buyers research before they buy, your conversion tracking already works, and you can fund a real test without starving the channels that pay the bills today. Hold off if you can’t measure a lead or sale, or if your category is restricted.

Good candidates:

  • E-commerce brands with clean product data (US merchants now have a Shopify app).
  • Local service businesses where one job is worth a lot.
  • Professional firms whose clients ask plenty of questions before hiring.
  • B2B products people compare before choosing.

Weak candidates are impulse purchases with thin margins, businesses without a landing page worth sending anyone to, and anyone hoping a new channel will rescue an offer that isn’t converting anywhere else.

We set up and run ChatGPT ad campaigns with tracking in place before the first dollar goes out, and report cost per lead next to your Google and Meta numbers.

Common questions about ChatGPT ads

Do ChatGPT ads change ChatGPT’s answers? No. OpenAI says ads don’t influence the answers, and ads are shown below the response with a sponsored label. Being mentioned inside the answer depends on your visibility and reputation across the web.

Can advertisers see what I type into ChatGPT? No. Advertisers don’t receive chats, memories, names, emails, precise location, or IP addresses. They see campaign results and the conversions their own tracking records.

Do ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers see ads? No. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are ad-free. Ads reach logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, minus Free users who chose the ad-free option with lower message limits.

Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads? Yes. As of fall 2026, the minimum daily budget in Ads Manager is $25, though a test that tells you something useful usually needs more budget and time than the floor.
